Gallbladder and Bile Duct Problems

Gallbladder disease is caused by conditions that slow or block the flow of bile from the gallbladder. Bile is a fluid that breaks down fat during the digestive process. Inflammation or gallstones can block the bile flow. Gallstones are solid particles that result from an imbalance of bile components. When gallstones or bile accumulate, the gallbladder can become inflamed. Gallstones are common health problems for people of all ages. The stones may cause no symptoms, but when they do, patients might experience nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). While many gallstones must be removed surgically, others can be removed non-surgically by our doctors at Gastroenterology Specialists, Inc.

Bile ducts from the liver can be blocked by scarring from injury, gallstones or cancer. Any blockage prevents bile from being transported to the intestine where it helps to digest food. A blockage can cause jaundice, and needs to be treated immediately.
