In a large US study, researchers found that people with metabolic syndrome have a 75% higher risk of developing colorectal cancer than those without metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is associated with obesity and is characterized by three chronic conditions: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Colorectal cancer is a common cancer and leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Because colorectal cancer that is diagnosed and treated early is associated with the best survival rates, the researchers implore people with metabolic syndrome to vigilantly receive colorectal cancer screening.
