Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer is one of the nation’s leading cancers, often starting as a benign tumor or polyp. Colon cancer occurs when cells in the interior lining of the colon or large intestine grow abnormally and out of control. A polyp is a small growth that projects out from the inside lining of the colon. Not all polyps turn into cancer. Polyps that turn into cancer typically take several years to do so. In most cases, there are few or no symptoms of colon cancer until the disease is advanced. For this reason, screening for colon cancer is imperative. It allows polyps to be detected early, which may prevent the development of cancer. Removal of colon polyps and early diagnosis is crucial. The “gold standard” for early detection is colonoscopy. Studies have shown that colonoscopy can detect over 98% of significant colorectal tumors.
A Colonoscopy is an outpatient procedure performed under sedation, to make the procedure more comfortable and relaxing. The procedure uses a colonscope, a long thin tube with a light and viewing instrument that sends images to a monitor. A tissue sample or biopsy can be taken with a colonscope. Additionally, polyps and other lesions can be removed at the time of the procedure.
Gastroenterology Specialists, Inc. can generally schedule your colonoscopy within a week. In the unlikely event that your colonoscopy reveals an abnormality, you’ll be in good hands. Gastroenterology Specialists, Inc. has some of the area’s most experienced colon and rectal experts.
Surgery is the primary treatment for colon cancer. Surgery removes the cancerous mass from the body. Advanced cancers may need additional therapy or additional treatments and you may be referred to an oncologist.
Additional therapies are used if there is a chance that cancer cells may exist outside of the surgical site or if there is a chance that the cancer might come back.
